Pink October: Every little effort helps
October is here, and it’s known all over the world as Breast Cancer Awareness Month. In Australia, 1 in 8 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer sometime in their lifetime; furthermore, statistics shows that 7 women die from breast cancer every day. Self-check at home is the first step of early detection of breast cancer. Familiarize with how your breast looks and feels so if you notice a change you can alert your doctor with this concern immediately. You can also talk to your medical provider about whether you qualify for any government funded screening program and recommend tests that are right for you. So what can you do to bring awareness to breast cancer this month? Here are some tips:
Many events for breast cancer research are going on this month, like marathons, triathlon, dinners and luncheons. You could even throw your own fundraiser if you'd like. The reason behind these events and fundraising activities is so doctors and scientists can continue on the road in finding a cure. One of the common goals for many foundations is to raise money so they can find a cure and achieve zero deaths from breast cancer by 2030.
Maybe you don't have the time to go to an event, don't worry, you could still support the cause by doing what many people do - shop! Many retailers and local shops have shown to support breast cancer research this month by either donating part of their sales revenue or promoting certain items in their shops or website. Next time when you go shopping, look out for those "pink incentives". On the other hand, some may choose to directly donate toward foundations, such as the National Breast Cancer Foundation, The Cancer Council, The McGarth Foundation, or the Breast Cancer Network Australia. Last but not least, spread the word about breast cancer prevention and detection to your close ones, you never know who will benefit from it! Do not underestimate the power of word of mouth.
To end, whether you donate money or bring awareness this month towards breast cancer, you are doing your part for the cause and every little effort helps.
